A 12-year-old girl with significant knock-knees (bilateral valgus knee) : the mechanical axis was abnormal, and there were functional and aesthetic problems (a, b). She underwent minimally invasive corrective surgery at OrthoChildren Center (medial hemiepiphysiodesis of the distal femur with bilateral 8-plates). Over the course of 6 months, the deformity was progressively corrected (c, d).
X-rays demonstrate the restoration of the normal mechanical axis, which now falls in the center of the knee. Hemiepiphysiodesis is a very effective procedure if performed correctly and with the right indications and timing. It does not require immobilization or casting, can be performed simultaneously on both knees, and allows for a rapid return to normal activities.
