Pediatric orthopedic surgeon: training in Italy and abroad
Curriculum Vitae
- Giovanni Lucchesi is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon who graduated with honors in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Messina. He then specialized in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the University of Florence, with honors, defending a multicenter thesis in Pediatric Orthopedics between Italy and France (focusing on the study of the Too-Long Anterior Calcaneal Process – TLAP).
- During his training as a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, he spent several periods at the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department of the Meyer Children’s Hospital in Florence, where he was able to study in depth topics such as the diagnosis and treatment of congenital clubfoot and hip dysplasia (under the guidance of Dr. Manuele Lampasi), and pediatric traumatology.
- He subsequently completed a one-year training period at the Humanitas Research Hospital in Milan where he learned the techniques of Lengthening and Correction of Complex Limb Deformities using the Ilizarov Method under the guidance of Dr. Alexander Kirienko, considered one of the world’s leading experts on this method.
- In 2021, he spent a period in France at the Pediatric Orthopedics Department of the Hôpital Jeanne de Flandre in Lille, directed by Professor Federico Canavese. During this period, he specialized in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of complex pediatric hip and foot malformations and in the field of Neuro-Orthopedics.
- During his training, he also had the opportunity to delve into other ultra-specialized fields, such as hand surgery and orthopedic oncology, attending the Hand Surgery and Reconstructive Microsurgery Unit and the Orthopedic Oncology Department at the CTO in Florence.
Pediatric orthopedic surgeon: the projects
- Building on a collaboration that began during his time at the Meyer Children’s Hospital in Florence, he joined the OrtoPediatria group in November 2021. Convinced of this recent project to relaunch and develop pediatric orthopedics in Italy, he began working with dr Lampasi with great enthusiasm.
- In 2022 he went to Poland to the Paley Institute Europe
- Furthermore, thanks to his collaboration with Dr. Bonforte, one of Italy’s leading experts in hip dysplasia, he has specialized in neonatal hip screening ultrasound and the treatment of pediatric hip dysplasia.
- In 2024 he went twice to the United States (Miami – Paley Institute, Baltimore – Limb Deformity Course) and once to Austria (Orthopedic Hospital Speising) to follow advanced courses regarding complex limb deformities, especially in the pediatric field.
- Also in 2024 he co-founded OrthoChildren Center, an International Center for the treatment of congenital and acquired deformities in Pediatric Orthopedics.
- He has published several articles in international journals on pediatric orthopedics. He actively participates in scientific papers and international conferences focusing on the many aspects of pediatric orthopedics.
Pathologies treated, fields of specialization in pediatric orthopedics
- Specializing in the treatment of complex deformities of the upper and lower limbs (congenital pseudoarthrosis, hypoplasias/hemimelias, Blount’s disease, achondroplasia, infectious sequelae, rickets and other skeletal deformities secondary to metabolic bone diseases, congenital clubfoot, hip dysplasia)
- In addition, he deals with the most common problems related to pediatric orthopedics (flatfoot, varus-valgus knee, scoliosis, pediatric traumatology, Perthes disease, slipped capital femorale epiphysis, etc.)
